Getting Organized

In the past year, I did a lot of reading up on birthing options and different practices.  I feel lucky that we live in Philly, so close to so many quality hospitals that give us solid options.

We decided we would go with the Pennsylvania Hospital midwifery practice.  One of our friends delivered there the year before, and another tried to get in there but was switching practices too late in her pregnancy so they couldn't accept her.  Both moms gave us a ton of information and reasons why they wanted to have their babies there.

We had our first appointment with the midwife coordinator, who explained that there are 14 midwives in the practice, and whomever is on shift when our baby is ready to come along would be the one to deliver the baby.  From the first appointment to the last, they try to set up your regular appointments with as many different midwives as possible so you can meet them.

When do we see a doctor, I asked.  For low-risk pregnancies and low-complication births, we wouldn't.  Crazy, right? But, of course, at Pennsylvania Hospital there are doctors on call and they are the best, so we feel good about the quality of docs that would be there should we need one.  Otherwise, we are just working with the nurses and midwives.  We like all the midwives so far.  Our appointments are every 3 weeks at first, then every 2 weeks, then every week as we get closer to July 19th.
