Keep your day job

Some time in May, Alex and I attended a bbq hosted by some high profile clients of mine over the river in NJ. They invited the entire town to feast on their delicious food, enjoy and dance to funky live music, and gave us personal tours of their business warehouse. The party died down and everyone ended up at a tiny inn down the street, where the host and hostess had rented out all the rooms and given keys to the needy (and want-y). I'm just not the type to turn down that kind of hospitality, so we imbibed after the eat-dance fest, knowing there was an air-conditioned suite with our name on it.

We spent the late hours speaking with a couple from New York - the husband an accountant, the wife a lawyer turned playwright, speaker, author, professor. After a couple of hours, Gloria and I ended the night with some powerful and inspiring discussion about the dilemma of remaining engaged in a community which raises you, when your ultimate goal may be far from your originating circumstances. As a successful black female, she has made it a point to remain engaged in her community, if only as a hobby. This approach she called the "weekend warrior". Help your community, give back, and keep your day job.
