The Chin Rule
This weekend our friend Tim turned... well, one year older. We planned to spend part of the weekend at his family's opulent shore house in Ocean City, NJ; Friday and Sunday we would be in Longport at another friends' place. We hoped to leave Philly around 8:30pm Friday, but I had a due process hearing for a school district that lasted 11.5 hours! All in one day! So, I didn't get home until 9, and we hit the road not too long after. In no time, you could hear the waves crashing in the darkness, in the distance. We scarfed down some amazing Wawa goodness, watched some TV, and crashed out.
In the morning, I tried to motivate myself to utilize the running shoes, warm-ups, and iPod I had optimistically packed for a productive morning, but the 12 hour workday had me crushed. I laid in bed, surfing my satellite radio and reading famous civil rights closing arguments in "The Walls Came Crashing Down" until Alex, aka the sleep monster, finally stirred from slumber. We picked up some groceries for a late breakfast, took a long, sweet, sunny, heart-warming walk on the beach. We scored the biggest sea shells in my shell collection - four huge (6") matching conicles, probably whelks. My toes stayed frozen for an hour, but that walk was by far the best part of the weekend - maybe of many weekends.
We met our friends at Chez Tim - a huge, gorgeous shore house with lots of beds and crazy people to sleep in the beds. We ate a lot of pizza, drank lots of beer, and played too many drinking games. During Kings, someone invoked the chin rule - anyone who curses has to continue playing with their chin on the table until the next person curses and "relieves" them. My chin was definitely on that table. Thank goodness there were other potty-mouths around. Due to Alex's ingenuity at the store and my strong belief in espousing the benefits of late-night ramen, we had instant noodles to send me off to sweet dreams in the wee hours.
Not to be too much of a downer, but a weekend at the beach, the sand between my toes, collecting shells, and smelling the ocean in the morning made the reality of my daily life ... well, just about loathsome. Cannot wait for spring/summer.
PS - got a new bikini at the surf shop, too! (Thanks, babe.)
