Paul and Cat take NL Day 3
Today, I had Organized Crime class in the morning. I didn’t learn how to launder money or anything. This is my favorite class as far as interest in the topic (Human Rights and Criminal Law is the most academically enticing). While some courses here have a “Professor” (who teaches all the classes), two of my courses have “Coordinators” and various “Lecturers.” The Coordinators lecture every now and then, but there are guest lecturers for most of the classes, who are experts in the topic. A neat system, and a great way to keep my interest.
The Coordinator for O.C. is called “Tim” because his last name is impossible to pronounce and he admits this. Two lecturers edited the book we use for the class, and are widely published. O.C. is not a law class – it is a sociological perspective on organized crime (aka criminology). The research done by our teachers for their publications involves field work – as in, they spend months and years living among criminals, earning their trust, gathering information, and writing about it in a way no police report could. Fascinating, and it really gives their lectures an edge.
After O.C., I biked down to the McDonald’s on Vrendenberg – an easy landmark plus Pauline was craving hashbrowns. We grabbed a breakfast pastry from the department store next door for me (sort of a Dutch pate chaud). We got Pauline acquited with the small downtown that is Utrecht, and stopped at a little body shop called Salon, where we splurged on some body scrub.
After Maggie and I got out of Dutch Law, we met Pauline for lunch at ‘T Gras – a perfect place for lunch as you can get a sandwich or soup, plus coffie or thee (coffee or tea) for EU5!
We finally got an outside bench this time, and really enjoyed lunch in the sun.
